Sandy O’Brien is an artist who creates encaustic and mixed media paintings, and who also creates altered books. The work above is titled “XOXO Dress” and 12”x16”. It looks to me to be encaustic, with newspaper, fabric, photo transfer,string and button. The white dress, with the XOXO , presents a contradiction. Is the dress protecting and loving her, or is it part of the system which binds her down? The female figure appears to be bound by string or wire to a bed, with her legs outspread. The red square in the corners frame her again , as either bedposts or the pillars of a box or a room. This is a powerful piece which invites speculation.
